Barbara Tierney Obituary

Barbara (Fitzgerald) Tierney, 88, of Newport, RI, formerly of Natick, MA, and Naples, FL, passed away, Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at the St. Clare Home, Newport, RI.

She was the wife of the late Edward Tierney Jr.

Born in Newton, MA, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary (McCormack) Fitzgerald.

She attended St. Bernard's School and Warren High School in West Newton. Upon graduation she worked at the telephone company where she made many lifelong friends.

Barbara and her late husband Ed (Buzzy) met through mutual friends in Nantasket Beach, married in 1956 and enjoyed 58 years together until his death in 2015. Most of those years were spent in Natick where they raised their children. Barbara worked for the Natick Public Schools and occasionally at other jobs, but her most cherished activity was caring for her home and her family.

After retirement, Barbara and Ed enjoyed spending time with family and friends in Naples, Florida and at Lake Winnepesaukee in New Hampshire.  They especially doted on their five grandchildren.  In Naples, Barbara was a very active member of the Countryside community where she made many dear friends and participated in a variety of social activities. She was also an active member of the Red Hat Society of Naples for many years.

Barbara is survived by her two children, daughter Mary Beth Tello and her husband Guillermo of Portsmouth, Rhode Island and son, Edward Tierney III of Colebrook, New Hampshire, and by five beloved grandchildren, Nicolas Tello of Los Angeles, CA; Liam Tello of Quito, Ecuador, Eoin Tierney of Philadelphia, PA and Maggie and Campbell Tierney of Quincy, MA. She is also survived by her sisters, Charlotte Martorana, of Natick, MA and Nancy Hobson of Pittsfield, MA, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers George and Walter Fitzgerald.
