Obituary

Don Alfred Lien, 93, of Natick, MA, formerly of Los Altos Hills, CA, passed away, Monday, August 14, 2023, at Metrowest Medical Center, Framingham, MA. Don was born in Iron Mountain, MI, he was the son of the late Alfred and Sylvia (Bloom) Lien. At age 16, he met the love of his life, Rosemarie Pauline (Parmiani) Lien.  In 1950  at age 21, they were married and recently celebrated their 73 Anniversary.

In 1951 Don joined the United States Air force and was deployed to the Midwest where he served for 8 years, during the Koran War as an air traffic controller.

After the service they moved back to California where he was employed by Hewlett Packard, as a manufacturing manager for over 40 years, retiring in the 1990’s.

While working for Hewlett Packard, they celebrated the adoption in the Mid 60’s of their only child Elisa.  Don loved to share his enjoyment of exploring nature with her whether it was swimming in the ocean or finding trails to climb.  Don loved planning trips with the family.  Among his most favorite places to travel to were Tahoe, Yosemite, Hawaii and in the later years Europe.  Don had a special fondness for both Kawaii and Salzburg Austria, where he enjoyed the culture.

One of his favorite yearly Christmas traditions was playing Hawaiian music while cooking Ebelskivers, which are a sweet Norwegian donut hole pastry eaten with jam and powdered sugar.

In Don’s later years he became interested in genealogy and was able to put together both his and his wife family tree as well as visiting both Norway and Italy where their ancestors came from.

At age 87, Don and Rosemarie bravely left California and moved to Natick Massachusetts, where they enjoyed a house with a wonderful view of Dug Pond and being close to their daughter Elisa, her husband Tom and their only granddaughter Rose.

Don and Rosemarie recently moved into Assistant Living at Residence of Valley Farm in Ashland.  The family would like to extend our gratitude to staff at Residence of Valley Farm for all the loving care they provided Don and continue to provide Rosemarie at this time.

Don is survived by his wife Rosemarie, his daughter Elisa M. Currie, her husband Tom of Natick MA and their daughter Rose.

If you would like to make a contribution in Don’s memory, the family request that you support Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, as they were very supportive to friend and family during the 1989 Bay Area Earthquake and are currently involved in Maui.

Funeral services and burial are private.
