Howard Hobson, 71, of Natick MA died March 17, 2024, in Lincoln, MA. Howard was born in Stockport, UK to Edith nee Dace Hobson and John Hobson on September 1, 1952.
He attended the Stockport technical high school for boys in Offerton, next he attended Worcester University in the UK and then a teacher training course. He taught school, then ran a student placement program, until becoming a VSO volunteer in Montserrat for one year, where he taught woodshop and metalworking.
It is in Montserrat that he made the connections that brought him to the US, where he remodeled houses, first in the Boston greater area and later in the Newark DE area. Howard could turn his hand to most of the building trades including electrical and plumbing and carpentry. Howard was an excellent tiler, had a good eye for design, and was a respected general contractor. For over 40 years, Howard helped to transform many houses into beautiful homes
Howard’s gift was to put all who he encountered at ease. He was happy to share a conversation on any number of topics from politics to the ballet, from the pre-Raphaelites to archeology, and geography. He loved to cook for others whether at Blue Hens tailgate, a Winterthur Point to Point or for a party of two to two hundred.
Howard was always good for a lively discussion over a glass of beer. He was a fine darts and pool player and often won his drinks for the evening, with a smile on his face. He had a rare memory for music, knowing the band members’ names, when and where the band played, what the last venue was that he saw them at and what tunes they played. Howard loved sailing tall ships, scuba-dive the reefs and to fish the ocean’s depths, always enjoying nature.
Howard is predeceased by his parents, Edith (Nee Dace) and Cyril Hobson. He is survived by his eldest brother John Cyril Hobson of Stockport UK, predeceased by his sister-in law Jean Buckley Hobson, and survived by his niece Lorraine Hobson Hartnett and his nephew Stephen Hobson. Howard is survived by his brother Russell Hobson of Stockport UK, his niece Louise Hobson Williams, and nephew Ian Hobson. Howard is also survived by his ex-wife, Jennifer Hintlian of Arden, DE.
Howard was an optimistic, easy going fellow who always saw the glass as half-full, his spirit will be missed by all who crossed his path. He spent his last years with his soulmate, Yvonne Dragan of Ravenel, SC, enjoying traveling, cooking, nature, and having adventures. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Foundation, the Red Cross, or a charity of your choosing.
