James “Chip” Clarence Allen, Jr., age 69, of Somerville, MA, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2024, after a long battle with diabetes and kidney complications. Born on March 20, 1955, at Harley Hospital in Boston, Chip was the beloved son of James C. Allen, Sr., and Josephine (Parks) Allen.
Chip was raised at 28 Balfour Street in Dorchester, where he embraced Boston’s spirit with pride. After graduating from Roslindale High School in 1972, he attended Berklee College of Music, studying Arranging and Composition. A true musician at heart, Chip connected deeply with music, beginning piano lessons in 1970 under Mr. Elwyn-Borrow. As a skilled musician and band leader, he led groups such as “Blood-Earth-and-Man,” “The Midnight Stars,” “Skyline,” and “Manhattan Touch,” finding success internationally and sharing his talents with audiences around the world.
In 1987, he married Thea Robin Brown in Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard. They later settled in Natick, MA, raising two children, Devin James Allen (34) and Marisa Clare Allen (32). Chip was also a devoted father to Sharita Marie Shortey (40) and Krystiphor James Cox (38). Known for his loyalty and depth, he brought humor and wisdom to those he loved, inspiring them with his belief in dreams and purpose.
Chip’s interests extended beyond music. He earned his Master Certificate in PC Service and Support from Clark University Computer Career Institute, broadening his skill set and passions.
He is predeceased by his parents and sister, Cheryl Allen-Stevens, and is survived by his former wife, Thea Brown-Allen of Oak Bluffs; his children, Sharita, Krystiphor, Devin, and Marisa; and his grandchildren, Amayah, Ayone, Ayhris, Axyl, Julian, and Audriana, along with extended family who cherished his presence.
