Obituary

Jocelyn Rhodes Carey, age 84, of Sherborn and Pocasset, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning, August 6, 2023. She was the cherished wife of the late Robert Willard Carey, MD for 54 years.  Born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Gloucester, she was a devoted daughter of Edith Warren Rhodes and Kent Rhodes and a loving granddaughter to Wango.

Jocelyn graduated from Gloucester High School in ‘57 and Simmons College of Nursing in ‘63. She trained at Mass General Hospital where she met Bob. After raising their family in Sherborn, Bob and Jocelyn moved to Westwood in recent years to Fox Hill Village.

Jocelyn was a loving and amazing mother and grandmother.  She gave her whole and best self to her family.  She had an incredible knack for connecting with children, providing them with endless art projects and games that would entertain them for hours.  She was creative, fun, upbeat and kind. She was always generous, was a wonderful home maker, and loved her pets. She was a great sailor and gardener and loved tennis and swimming in the ocean.  She enjoyed reading the paper every day. She loved to laugh and experienced true delight in everyday things.  She was always fashionable, even to the end of her life when she would be seen in stylish and elegant outfits at every family get-together. Her favorite place to spend time with family was Wings Neck in Pocasset, with its tall pine trees and scenic swimming cove. A stroke limited her ability to talk for the final 17 years of her life, but she admirably rose above this and continued to connect with those around her.  She could express more with a delighted laugh than many could express with their words.

Jocelyn is survived by two dedicated sons, Ted Carey and his wife Kelly of Upton, and Will Carey and his wife Jill of Natick; a dear daughter, Madeleine Carey Sampson, and her husband Brad Sampson, of Duxbury.  She has eight cherished grandchildren. They are Teddy, Matthew, David, and Luke Carey and Chasey, Miles, Tucker, and Fletcher Sampson.  She has a faithful sister, Cherry Rhodes Thomas and her husband Ladd of Pasadena, CA and a caring brother Warren Rhodes of Gloucester.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug 20 at 12:00 pm at Everett Funeral Home in Natick, MA. Reception to follow at 1:15 pm in Sherborn.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jocelyns memory to Simmons University Advancement, P.O. Box 200099, Roxbury Crossing, MA 02120-9998 or online.
