John R. Haslam of Marlborough, MA formerly of Garfield and Clifton, NJ passed away on July 22, 2022. Devoted father of Michael Haslam and his wife Kim of Northbridge. Loving grandfather of Andrew and Samantha Haslam. Dear friend of Richard Ruzila. Son of the late John and Verna (Winnemaker) Haslam.
John was a Navy Veteran, serving his country during the Vietnam War. He spent time as a combat readiness officer, certifying ships for combat at the US Naval Base in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. He was also assigned to the USS Lasalle (LPD-3/AFG-3), where he was the helmsman as the ship sailed past the tip of Africa.
John was known as a shy and quite man, who was kind to all that he had met. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, kayaking, and studying the history of the Civil War. His home was full of rare and vintage books written about the Civil War from the viewpoint of both sides as well as several rifles from the war. One of his prized possessions was a rifle used by the regiment his family served with during the Civil War. But anyone who knew him, knew his true love was his grandchildren. He could be found most days spending time with both Andrew and Samantha
In lieu of flowers donations in memory of John may be made to his grandchildren’s College Fund c/o Michael Haslam, 143 Mendon Rd Northbridge, Ma 01534
