John “Jack” Gary Mackin of Natick, MA, passed away unexpectedly on May 20, 2024 at the age of 49. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a beloved son, and a cherished friend to many.
The son of Gary John Mackin (deceased) and Kathleen Lake (mother) and David Lake (stepfather) of West Boylston, MA, he was called Jack by everyone who knew and loved him.
Jack had a magnetic personality, a charisma that made each and every person he met feel important, loved, and as if they were one of his close friends. He was “the ultimate fan of life,” with a thirst to experience as much as he could with good friends and family by his side – always with a contagious smile on his face. He was steadfast, honest and generous; quick to welcome family and friends into his home, to share in a celebration, cheer for his friends and to support the people he loved. He had a gift for making everyone feel welcome, special and at ease.
He was born in Arlington, MA, and grew up in Waltham and Shrewsbury, MA where he attended St. John’s high school and met several of his closest friends. Jack later attended Georgetown University where he graduated from the McDonough School of Business in 1997 and was a member of the Georgetown Varsity Heavyweight crew team. At Georgetown, he met a group of lifelong friends who became his family.
He always made time for friends. He could be found on the golf course at least once a week with friends talking about life, sports and enjoying the outdoors. In addition to being an athlete, he was a passionate fan of all Boston sports, especially the Celtics.
The only son in a family with four children, Jack grew up surrounded by sisters. He was an incredibly caring brother, protector and champion of the women in his life, an experience that helped prepare him for fatherhood. A deeply devoted father, he loved his two children, Landey and Drew, unconditionally and with great pride. His love for family also made him a favorite among his many cousins, nieces and nephews.
His life became truly complete when he met his wife Jennifer Elias Newberg in 2013 and married her in 2015. Together they raised both of their children, embraced each other’s family, traveled the world, danced to the music at endless concerts and loved and supported each other passionately through good times and tough ones.
Jack lived with Jen and their children in Natick, where he was the CEO of Multivista Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. Earlier, he spent his early career working at his family’s business, F.D. Sterritt Lumber, where he rose to become CEO.
He is survived by his loving wife Jennifer Elias Newberg; his children Landey and Drew Mackin; his step daughter Brooke Newberg; his mother and step father Kathleen and David Lake; his sisters Carolyn (Michael), Colleen (Christopher), Christine (Jason) and step siblings James Lake (Katie) and Kristin Lake; and nieces and nephews: Jase and Kyle Watson, Nicholas, Ryan, Emily and Abigail Hunter, Briella and Ayla Nelson, Gracyn and Madison Lake as well as his Godmother, Gail Mackin (Carol).
