Patricia Ternes Obituary

TERNES, Patricia Regan.

87, of Sherborn, died peacefully October 1st after a courageous battle with acute kidney disease. Patricia is survived by her loving family: daughter Elizabeth Zeiss and her husband Michael of New Canaan, CT and granddaughter Madeline Zeiss of Manhattan. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, William Ternes; daughter, Catherine Brechner of Newburyport, MA; and grandson, Nicholas Zeiss of Brooklyn, NY. Patricia was born in Jamestown ND,  daughter of Dr. John Francis and Frances (Haagensen) Regan. She grew up in Rhode Island and graduated from the Lincoln School in Providence. She continued her education at the University of Wisconsin in Madison with a BA in English.

A resident of Sherborn for 59 years, Patricia  pursued many interests, including land conservation, horseback riding, tennis and art. She was devoted to ecological preservation, serving for several years on the Sherborn Conservation Commission and then on the Trustees Council of the Trustees of Reservation, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and sharing over 100 Massachusetts places people love for their exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value.

Patricia owned and rode horses for decades, enjoying trail riding and fox hunting with the Norfolk Hunt Club. Her large chestnut horse, Toronto, was a favorite. In addition to receiving Norfolk Hunt colors, she served as Secretary of the Hunt Organization. An avid tennis player,  Patricia enjoyed her social tennis group, playing with her close friends for decades. She was always on the lookout for any opportunity to win the point with a put-away volley.

And finally, the fine arts were a central part of her life. She volunteered with the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston by serving on the Ladies Committee, leading architectural tours of Boston and volunteering in the Japanese Print Department. Most important to her, however, was supporting her husband Bill in his career as a watercolor and oil painter. She organized the many workshops he taught in New England, the Bahamas and throughout Europe.

After a private family funeral, interment will be at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Sherborn.
