Robert Kim Obituary

Robert Misoo Kim of Natick MA passed away peacefully on October 5, 2023. Born in Paterson NJ, he was the son of Gay B. Kim, MD and Ellen Chung Kim, both of Korea.

After graduating Montclair Kimberley Academy in Montclair, NJ, he earned degrees from Yale University and Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his surgical training at Boston City Hospital. He served in the Korean War as a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps. A diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, he established his practice in Natick at the Leonard Morse Hospital where he was elected Chief of Surgery and president of the medical staff. He was elected to the New England Vascular Society, the Eastern Vascular Society, and the New England Surgical Society.

He was a life-long learner and avid reader. Always with his “little black book” which in time evolved into his ever-present iPad, Bob was an effective organizer and leader. He was a natural athlete, playing basketball, football, track, tennis, golf, and baseball from high school to college and throughout his later years. Despite having never played the sport, Bob was a coach for the Natick Recreational Soccer League in order to spend more time with his four children. He loved to garden, growing tomatoes, peppers, and squash from seed. He was a devoted New York Yankees fan. He always said if he had not gone to medical school, he would have been playing shortstop in the Bronx. He was a patron of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and loved to travel internationally, although his favorite place was New York City. He had humor and wit which lasted him until the very end, often telling people that he had been switched at birth with the Dali Lama.

Bob was predeceased by his sister Marion of Honolulu. He is survived by his loving wife, Bette Pierce Janse and his children from a previous marriage, David of Hong Kong, Peter of Cambridge MA, Stephanie of New York City, Doriot of Jersey City NJ and her husband Brian Uy.  He was grandfather to Levi, Nina, and Maxine Uy. He was the stepfather to David, Philip, both of Charleston SC, and Peter of Dighton MA and leaves seven step-grandchildren.
