Rose Bates Obituary

97 passed away peacefully on January 30th 2021 surrounded by her loving family after a period of declining health.

Beloved wife of 60 years to the late Robert Bates. Rose lived her entire life in, and was extremely proud of, the town of Natick. She often reminisced about walking from her childhood home to the movie theater that once existed downtown for a matinee, climbing Coolidge Hill, visiting the library and frequenting the many local shops that made up Natick in the 1930 and 40’s. She loved her town and the many friends, neighbors, and relatives that lived there. She was the daughter of Salvatore and Guiseppina, Italian immigrants who settled in the Coolidge Woods section of town in the early 1900’s. She graduated from Natick High School in 1941, where she met her future husband Robert. During the war, Rose volunteered at Cushing Hospital as a Nurses’ aide and cared for returning soldiers. When Robert returned from Europe, after serving in the Navy, they married. Rose trained as a beautician and worked at Susan’s Beauty Salon before her marriage. While raising her family, she also worked in various capacities in the Natick Public Schools, retiring as a secretary in the front office at Natick High School.

Rose is survived by her six children and their families: Carol Flanagan and her fiancé James Zito of New London, CT, Carl Bates and his late wife, Donna (Cericola) of Ashland, Mary Jo Flanagan and her husband Richard, of Houston, TX, Robert Bates of Natick, Thomas Bates and his wife, Patricia, of Franklin, and Richard Bates and his wife Elizabeth, of Quincy.

Grammie is also survived by her twelve grandchildren: Erin Ruedele and her husband Franz, R. Liam Flanagan, James R. Flanagan and his wife Joanna, Kerry Flanagan, Danielle Barry and her husband Edward, Ryan Bates and his wife Patricia, Christopher Bates and his wife Dana, Darren Bates, Andrea Bates, Justin Bates, Patrick Bates, and Joseph Bates; and great grandchildren Bennett, Harrison, Donna, Zachary, Isabelle, Cara, and Josephine. In addition she had many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.

Rose leaves her sister Marie Ellis of Framingham and was    predeceased by her sister Frances Precopio of Newton, and brother Vito Sammartano of Chatham.

Rose most enjoyed being with her family and friends, vacationing in her Harwich Port cottage, and sharing her many varied interests like crocheting and cooking. She was a faithful communicant at St. Linus Church in Natick where she sang in the choir for many years.

Your presence will always be with us. Thank you for being an excellent role model and for loving us unconditionally.  We hope we have made you proud.  Rest in Peace.

A private service will be held for immediate family at John Everett & Sons Funeral Home in Natick.  A memorial Mass will be held at St. Linus Church in Natick for family and friends on a date to be determined when it is safe to do so.

Donations may be made in Rose's memory to the Natick Service Council, 2 Webster St, Natick, MA 01760, or to a charity of one’s choice.
