Sandra Preston Obituary

Sandra Ann Preston in Natick formerly of Kalamazoo, MI passed away on February 22, 2024. She was born on August 30,1939 in White Pigeon, MI to the late Paul Preston and Zella May Bradley.  Devoted mother of Terry (Linda) Anderson of Natick and the late Timothy Anderson. Loving grandmother of Evin, Jennifer and Justin Anderson.

Sandy earned her associate degree in nursing at Kalamazoo Valley Community College and her bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University. Sandra was a dedicated nurse. She worked in the burn unit of Bronson Hospital for over a decade.  She later worked for the County, running prevention programs to provide prenatal care and case management support to pregnant women with a history of having premature births, as well as to support women through their pregnancies who had a history of substance abuse. Not only did Sandy and her team provide medical support, education, and promote healthy activities, they treated each woman with respect and care, and provided her a beautiful baby blanket that had been skillfully knit by Sandy’s mother Zella.

Sandy loved animals - often having multiple cats and dogs in her home. She was known to save neighborhood cats that she felt were not getting sufficient support from their owners. Sandy volunteered with the SPCA and with the Binder Park Zoo.

Sandy enjoyed listening to music including both country and rock & roll, and especially appreciated beautiful harmonies from Queen, the Mamas & the Papas, and the Beach Boys. Sandy loved riding her bicycle and had a beautiful customized red bike. Sandy also enjoyed line dancing until her knees and balance left her. Sandy was a photographer with her own dark room, and she enjoyed traveling and taking pictures of birds and scenery. Her travels included both Europe and most of the US. She shared that the most beautiful place she had ever seen was Alaska, where she went with her cousin Penny Smith. She particularly loved the beauty of Denali National Park and Preserve.

Sandy lived in Portage/Kalamazoo area of Michigan for the majority of her life and appreciated so many things about Michigan. She loved Mackinac Island, visiting lakes, beaches, and beach towns up and down Lake Michigan. She enjoyed bringing her friends and family to enjoy Clementine’s onion rings in South Haven and the ice cream cones at Plainwell Ice Cream.
