Sheila (Robertson) Magullion, 93, of Natick, passed away, Saturday, May 20, at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston.
She was the wife of the late Frank Magullion for 50 years. She met Frank, who was from Dorchester, on a European ski adventure. A few years later they wed and she settled in the town of Natick where she built a horticultural legacy.
Born in Taggerty, Australia, she was the daughter of the late Alec and Dorothy (McDougall) Robertson. Sheila had a knack for growing plants even at young age. When she came to Massachusetts she spent much of her time learning how plants grew here. She worked for the Arnold Arboretum, where she learned to propagate plants, and did more growing at New England Wildflower Society. While working at their headquarters in Framingham, she discovered a deep blue variety of Lobelia that came to be known as “Sheila’s Blue.”
Late in her life, Sheila took up pottery. She sold much of her work to local craft enthusiasts.
Sheila had worked as a horticulturist for many years. She enjoyed travel, skiing and horseback riding.
Sheila was gardening and working on her beloved pond just days before passing away. When asked once about why we are here. she replied, "To be impressed. To notice and admire, in the brief seconds of late afternoon light, when it falls on the soft needles of the distant blue fir.”
She is survived by her nephews Peter, Bruce, Ross and Duncan, the children of her late elder sister Marjorie (Robertson) Friday.
Donations in Sheila’s memory may be sent to Trustees of the Reservation, Mount Auburn Cemetery, the Garden Conservancy or the Humane Society.
