Susan M. (McCarthy) Hickey, a lifelong Massachusetts resident, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2025, at the age of 81, after a life filled with love, laughter and devotion to family and friends.
Born in Newton on January 9, 1944, Susan was the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Moore) McCarthy. She was a devoted mother to Thomas B. Hickey Jr. and his wife Elissa of Sherborn, MA, Christine Ordway and her husband David of Natick, MA, Colleen Hyland and her companion Christian Ouellette of Marlborough, MA, and the late Michael Hickey and his fiancée Erika Boucher of Framingham, MA. She was the proud and loving “Mimi” to Lauren Ordway of Fresno, CA, Thomas and Kevin Ordway of Natick, MA, and Thalia Hyland of Marlborough, MA. Nothing brought Susan more joy than her grandchildren, the lights of her life. She celebrated every accomplishment, showed up for every moment that mattered, and showered them with unconditional love. Being Mimi wasn’t solely a title; it was who she was at her core. She is also survived by her brother, James R. McCarthy Jr. of Matthews, NC, her best friend of over 60 years, Marilyn Ghioni of Norfolk, MA, and her favorite date, George Shaw of Framingham, MA. She leaves behind many beloved in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. Susan was the former wife of the late Thomas B. Hickey Sr.
She dedicated many years to service as Past President of the Rebekah Assembly of Massachusetts, Past Grand Patriarch of The Grand Encampment, and as a proud member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). A natural leader with a heart for community and serving others. When she wasn’t with her family, she could be found at a bingo hall in Millis, Norfolk, Medfield, or Framingham, where she lit up the room with her competitiveness. Bingo was a way for Susan to stay connected, laugh and make memories with the friends she held dear.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers at Newton Wellesley Hospital and Mary Ann Morse Healthcare Center for their compassion these last few months. Visiting hours will be held at John Everett & Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park Street, Natick Common, on Thursday, July 17 from 4 to 7 p.m., followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m. Her burial will take place at a later date. Relatives and friends are warmly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan’s memory may be made to the Rebekah Assembly of MA, 36 Branch Street, Malden, MA 02148-4304 (to support their scholarship fund), or to a charity of one's choice.
