William D. Tailby Jr.

William D. Tailby Jr., (Bill) 76, of Natick, Massachusetts, died on August 13, 2026, in his home surrounded by family. Bill was born on June 3, 1950, in Newton, Massachusetts to the late William and Marjorie Tailby. He grew up in Wellesley and later made his home in Needham, where he and his wife lived for 36 years, raised their three children, and formed an ongoing bond with the Stewart Road neighbors.

Bill was the adoring husband of Nancy Topping-Tailby, to whom he was married for nearly 52 years. He was a devoted father to Rachel Tailby, Laura Tailby and her fiancé, Nick Thornton, and to Jesse Tailby and his wife, Julia Tailby. He passed his love of trains to his namesake grandson, William V. Tailby, and his blue eyes to his darling granddaughter, Amelia C. Tailby. He was the loving brother of Priscilla, Charlie, and late sister, Carol, and cared deeply for his extended family – including his nephews, niece, and cousins.

His natural curiosity contributed to a lifelong love of learning. Bill earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Northeastern University and a master's degree in computer science from Boston University. That combination suited him well by melding his interests in human behavior and technological advancements, which led to his decades-long career in marketing at Data General.

More than anything, Bill was a consummate caregiver and dedicated provider for his family. Throughout his life, he quietly took care of the people around him: his parents, his brother Charlie, his wife and children, and so many others. He rarely talked about what he was doing and never needed recognition for it. He worked hard, put other people before himself, and tried, above all else, to do what was best for his family.

Bill was kind, gentle, and remarkably easy to please. He did not need much in the way of material things. Happiness could be found in Coca-Cola with crushed ice, cherries, chewing gum, or during his working years, grape juice and Triscuits with pub cheese which he enjoyed in his recliner with his children on his lap. He loved building a good fire, gardening, completing projects around the house, and listening to music, especially Van "The Man" Morrison. Behind a camera, Bill had a particular ability to notice light, nature, and beauty that other people might walk right past. He also loved Cape Cod, and particularly Sea Street beach, where he spent many summers, first with his beloved Aunt Thelma and Uncle Robert, and later with his own family.

His family will remember his wonderfully dry, sarcastic sense of humor, delivered with such a straight face that sometimes it took a moment to realize he was joking. They will miss his gentleness, his steady presence, and the countless quiet ways he made their lives better. Most of all, they will miss just being with him.

The Tailby family invites guests to a memorial gathering at the Josiah Smith Tavern Barn in Weston, MA on Saturday, August 29th from 1:00pm - 5:00pm. Light refreshments will be served. His family will make remarks at 3:30pm and open this time to any of his family and friends who may wish to speak.
