Obituary

ZOINO, William S. “Bill” age 91, formerly of Brockton and West Harwich, died peacefully on Saturday, July 22, 2023.  He lived a long and wonderful life filled with love and enjoyed much personal and professional success.

Born and raised in Brockton, Bill was the son of the late John and Rose (Centrella) Zoino. He grew up in a large and loving family and was always proud of his Brockton roots. Bill was a graduate of the Brockton High School class of 1950. He went on to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in 1954 and a Master’s degree in 1955, both in civil/geotechnical engineering. After serving his country in the U.S. Navy, Bill worked on engineering projects all over the United States and overseas. In 1964, Bill and MIT classmate Don Goldberg started GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc., where he worked until his retirement in 1994. GZA is a thriving geotechnical firm to this day thanks to Bill’s hard work and dedication to the company and to the engineering field. After retiring, Bill remained an active geotechnical consultant and advisor, leaving a legacy of professionalism and expertise for his colleagues in the industry and beyond. Bill was also devoted to his community, lending his expertise as a volunteer member of the Conservation and Water Commissions for Brockton, the city he loved. Bill’s esteemed career brought him many awards and acknowledgements and ultimately led to his induction as a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, an honor which he proudly celebrated with his family at the award ceremony in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2013.

While Bill enjoyed a successful professional career, he truly loved spending time with his family. Bill was an avid gardener and winemaker and spent his retirement tending his garden and sizable vineyard in West Harwich, Cape Cod. He gathered family and friends every fall to harvest the grapes and bottle his award-winning homemade wine, and would always invite everyone to stay for a family-style meal after the work was done. Bill loved to travel and visited many cities, states, and countries throughout his life. Bill was immensely proud of his Italian heritage and diligently researched his genealogy, and one of the happiest times in his life was being able to bring his whole family, including his daughters, their families, and his six siblings to Italy on two separate occasions. Bill enjoyed telling stories, playing bridge (for which he proudly achieved Master status), cracking jokes, and taking his grandchildren fishing.

Bill was the beloved husband of the late Ann L. (Westman) Zoino, his wife of 55 years who predeceased him in 2016. Bill is survived by his loving wife of six years, Ann E. (Minnema) Zoino; his daughters, Julia A. Jeannetti and her husband Ronald of Dedham, Kathryn R. Archard and her husband Steven of Bridgewater, and Paula M. Dimidis and her husband Craig of Framingham; six grandchildren: Jacki (Archard) Weddleton and her husband Mark of West Bridgewater, Michael Archard and his wife Rachelle of Canton, Paul Jeannetti of Dedham, Sophia Dimidis of Charlotte, NC, and William and Nathaniel Dimidis of Framingham, as well as three great-grandchildren: Naia, Mila, and Mason. Bill is also survived by several siblings: John Zoino and his wife Marion of Florida, Robert Zoino and his wife Sonia of Bridgewater, Rose Marie Schmitchel and her husband Sydney of Bridgewater, Richard Zoino and his wife Barbara of Harwich, as well as the late Madelyn and Arthur Kubiak and the late Phyllis and Albert St. George. Bill is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws, both in the United States and in Italy.
